Economic Profile

Regina – the capital of Saskatchewan – is a changing city whose economic growth has exceeded expectation. With a focus on talent, innovation, and sustainability, the Regina region is full of opportunity and potential. Solid economic performance, low costs, high job tenure combined with an excellent quality of life has made this the best time to ThinkRegina.

Western Canada has become a hotspot for new investment coming from both within Canada and internationally. Saskatchewan has been one of the western provinces at the front of the pack in terms of growth and new developments. Within Saskatchewan, Regina has contributed to the strong provincial economy with a balanced and sustainable mix of goods and service industries. Indeed, the Conference Board in their Winter 2008 report claimed that Regina had “posted its best growth since 1997 as it quarterbacked a thriving province.”

As western cities lead the charge in economic growth in Canada, the Regina region is fast becoming one to watch.  Of course, both sectoral GDP and employment encompass a wide-range of industries but Regina's existing economic structure can be described, for simplicity, in six key sectors.  They are: Steel and Manufacturing, Information Technology, Film & Interactive Media, Energy and Environment, Finance & Insurance, and Agri-Business.

Regina has a well-balanced economy in terms of both employment and GDP. According to the Conference Board of Canada, approximately 16% of the employment in 2007 was in goods producing industries and 84% was in service industries. Comparing this to GDP in the same year, the goods producing industries count for 23% of all GDP and services for 77%.

Regina is also diversifying its economy and entering new industries including but not limited to: Distribution and Warehousing, Assembly, and Public Safety and Security.
